The night where WWE goes Extreme, Extreme Rules took place on Sunday 22nd May at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Will Styles become Champion and will he need the help of his friends to do it? Let's take a look.
The match on the Kick Off Show was between
Dolph Ziggler and
Baron Corbin in a no disqualification match. In a short one, Corbin gets the win after a low blow followed by an End of Days. Not a bad match but it seemed that it was only no disqualification just so they could have the ending.
Winner: Baron Corbin
Extreme Rules starts with
The Usos taking on the team of
Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows in a tornado tag team match, in which all the wrestlers are in the ring at the same time. In a very fast paced match, the end comes when Gallows tries to hit Jimmy with the ringbell but he gets hit with a superkick. Jimmy goes for a splash but he misses and hits the bell. Gallows and Anderson then hit the magic killer to get the win. I thought that it was an enjoyable match to watch and I look forward to seeing more of Gallows and Anderson.
Winners: Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson
Next is
Rusev challenging
Kalisto for the United States Championship. Kalisto tries to use his
quickness to keep Rusev on his toes. However, soon after Rusev starts to completely destroy Kalisto. In the end, Rusev chucks Kalisto off the turnbuckle onto the apron. A doctor tries to check on him but Rusev goes "fuck that" and folds him in half applying the accolade. to get the win. It felt like a bit of a squash match and whilst I predicted that Kalsito would win, I'm glad that Rusev is the new Champion.
Winner:Rusev
The Tag Team Championship was next was
The Vaudevillians challenge
The New Day. The Vaudevillians had a chance to win it when they hit the whirling dervish nut Woods kicks out. In the end, Big E spears English off the apron. Gotch then got hit with the trouble in paradise by Kofi followed by a shining wizard by Woods to get the win. A good match tho I thought it was a bit short.
Winners: The New Day
The next match is one that I'm really looking forward to:
Sami Zayn, Cesaro and
Kevin Owens challenging
Hollywood Miz for the Intercontinental Championship. The match starts with Zayn immediately hitting Owens with a helluva kick followed by Cesaro hitting Miz with an European uppercut, leaving the two of them to have a mini match. Other highlights of the match include: Cesaro, Zayn and Miz hitting a belly-to-back t-bone suplex combo; Cesaro hitting numerous European uppercuts; and a great bit where Zayn hits Owens with a German suplex then is immediately brutally murdered with an European uppercut by Cesaro. Miz then almost wins the match when he hits Cesaro with the skull crushing finale. The end comes when Zayn hits Cesaro with the helluva kick but Owens stops the pin by pulling him out of the ring. Zayn starts beating the fuck out of Owens while Miz manages to crawl over and pin Cesaro to get the win. This is an amazing match to watch with so many great spots. I was quite surprised that Miz but I'm happy with it and it helped to create a brilliant ending. A definite match of the year candidate.
Winner: The Miz
Next is an asylum match between
Chris Jericho and
Dean Ambrose. It is a cage match (but you can't leave the cage) with various weapons hanging above it, including a fire extinguisher and a potted plant(?) Dean Ambrose wins after spinebusting Jericho onto a pile of thumb tacks followed by hitting dirty deeds. To be honest, the match wasn't that special and it was a big disappointment considering who was involved.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Next was a submission match for the Women's Championship with
Natalya challenging
Charlotte. They both do other submission moves such as a surfboard and a half Boston crab. Natalya gets Charlotte in the sharpshooter when Ric Flair's music plays. Due to the stipulation that Charlotte will lose the title if he comes to ringside, Natalya stops the hold, thinking she's won. However, it's actually Dana Brooke from NXT. Charlotte takes advantage of the distraction to attack Natalya and make her tap to the figure eight to get the win. Even though I thought it was a bit short, it was quite a good match and it's nice to see Dana Brooke make her debut in the main roster.
Winner: Charlotte
The main event is an Extreme Rules Match with
AJ Styles challenging
Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Styles gets hit with some brutal moves. He gets back body dropped through the announce table then he receives a Razor's Edge into a sit down powerbomb. Later on, he gets powerbombed through the Spanish announce table. As expected, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson come out followed by The Usos to degenerate the match into a clusterfuck. In the end, Styles beats the fuck out of Reigns and The Usos then goes for the phenomenal forearm. However, Reigns counters with a spear to get the win. Afterwards, Seth Rollins returns and gives Reigns a pedigree.
I enjoyed this match. However, I felt that The Usos were helping Reigns a bit too much such as attacking Styles and stopping a pin. If you want Reigns to go over, you can't have them do things like that. As for Rollins, I'm so happy he's back. Slightly disappointed he came back as a heel as I thought he would be a great babyface. However, WWE can't afford to do that while they're forcing Reigns down our throat so I understand thier decision.
Winner: Roman Reigns
I quite enjoyed Extreme Rules with, the expection of some issues from the main event, some good matches. Next is Money in the Bank, which one of my favourite events of the year, and it will be interesting where WWE plan to take the New Era at this juncture.
